How to Request a PIN

The PIN, acronym for “Personal Identification Number,” represents a personal access code essential for accessing online services provided by the INPS, the National Social Security Institute. This identification system allows each user to securely and privately access services and information relevant to their situation.

However, it is important to emphasize that the PIN continues to play a significant role for a particular group of citizens. Starting from October 1, 2021, the issuance of the PIN is exclusively reserved for citizens residing abroad who do not have Italian identification documents. These citizens may not be able to request SPID due to their specific situation, and therefore the PIN represents a valuable option to enable them access to INPS services.

In this way, INPS has adopted a fair approach to ensure that all citizens, including those unable to request SPID, have the opportunity to benefit from the online services offered by the institute.

It is therefore reminded that the PIN is exclusively reserved for foreign citizens who need to independently access INPS services.

Ordinary PIN and Device PIN - Let's clarify.

The PIN, or “Personal Identification Number,” is divided into two main categories: the ordinary PIN, used for consulting data related to contribution position or pensions, and the device PIN, necessary for requesting benefits and economic allowances. The implementation of the device PIN aims to ensure greater security in identifying the applicant. To obtain the device PIN, you can follow one of the following procedures:

  1. Fill out the request form available online MV35 in the service “Richiesta Pin online > Vuoi il PIN dispositivo?” And send it along with a copy of your identification document via fax. Alternatively, you can go in person to an INPS office and book access to the fast-track counter. Information about INPS offices can be accessed through the “INPS Offices” service or the INPS Mobile app, or by contacting the Contact Center at 803164 from a landline (free) or 06164164 from a mobile phone (charges according to your mobile plan). The service is available from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 20:00 and on Saturday from 8:00 to 14:00.

However, it is important to note that it is possible to submit a benefit request using the ordinary PIN as well, which allows for any deadlines to be suspended. The request will be processed once the user has converted the ordinary PIN into a device PIN.

Eligible Users for PIN Issuance

The request for a PIN through the “Request PIN” function of the online PIN service is allowed exclusively for citizens residing abroad and not in possession of Italian identity documents issued in Italy. In other words, only those who meet both of the following conditions have the right to request a PIN using this service:

  1. They must be residents abroad: The applicant must reside outside the Italian borders, meaning they have their residence abroad.
  2. They must be without Italian identity documents: The applicant must not be in possession of Italian identification documents issued in Italy, such as the Italian identity card or Italian passport.
  3. All foreign citizens without Italian documents can request the PIN.
